Week 27: YouTube Shorts

Read Time:47 Second

Hello!
I've taken into the plunge of the YouTube #shorts world! YouTube shorts are video filmed in portrait and less than 60 seconds long. So I thought I'd try to upload a new short everyday! You can find these shorts on my YouTube Channel, but I've also made a dedicated page on this website! I'll list the tunes I play in these blog entries. I'll be trying to do tunes I have lessons for! You'll get to follow us around the country as I'll be filming quite a few on the road! (I should have started whilst we were in Sweden and done the Midsommar parade! Maybe I'll sneak it in by stealth!)

Shorts tunes this week:
Näckens Midsommar Polska
Elsy's Waltz
Schottis known as LegoBricks

Lessons added to the site this week:
Hambopolska efter Sixten i Verpehultesberg (in the Silverbasharpa course)
and Elliot Finn MacDonald for the Scottish Smallpipes.

Enjoy!

Hello!
We're back home from Sweden and straight back onto the road again. So it's time to bring a couple of lessons over from the old site. I thought it was the perfect opportunity to bring over Mid-Year Spice as it is the middle of the year! Play it with a laid back groove! I also added The Singi Sunset, a nice little waltz.
Mid-Year Spice
The Singi Sunset

I've also added Gånglåt i Sorg on the English Border Pipes. Very sad tune! (If you'd like to play it on nyckelharpa go to this version!)

I hope you're all having a great midsummer!

Week 24: One Week Until Midsommar!

Read Time:55 Second

Hello!
We've been very much away this week, but I did have a question about one of the lessons last night with a D tuning question, so once we'd finished rehearsing I went and filmed a quick video. Speed was of the essence, so I filmed in the spare room! I added that video to the original lesson.
Starter for Two - D tuned

It's fast approaching Midsommar and there are some definite tunes a person needs to learn for midsommar. I am on the road and away from camera for the next week - but I'm going to see if I can put together a Midsommar Tune Survival guide whilst I'm away - I may need to film by stealth! Watch out for next week's blog entry, I'll add it early and keep updating as I go!

This got me thinking about Midsommar 2020. I did some films for a Swedish mosaic, pairing Böl-Olle's Schottis with Äppelbo Gånglåt. So I've added Böl-Olle's Schottis to this site and included the video at the bottom of this page!
Enjoy!

Week 23: Halsway Spring Weekend Videos

Read Time:31 Second

Hello!
I decided it was finally time to complete the Spring Weekend videos! There were three left, so here they are! (I'm just one video behind now from the study week, so watch out for that!)
Imeland och Grimeland
Polka från Finland
Bobby Joe
And finally another tune for the Scottish Smallpipes - Colin's Cattle
I'm off to Sweden to celebrate Midsommar soon - so I'm learning some new tunes for that. They'll end up here in the fullness of time!
On a light hearted note - we bought a train whistle and I decided I absolutely had to unbox it! Video below.
Enjoy

Week 22: The Standing Stones of Stanton Drew

0 0
Read Time:42 Second

Hello!
The weather is lovely and we've been on the road pretty much the whole week, Cornwall last weekend and now we're in Wales! So what is new this week?

Oxfolk Two - this is for the Scottish Smallpipes
Olle's Polska - a very old video, one of my originals from when I started my YouTube channel and a lovely tune!
The Devil's Schottis - as we went down to Bude last weekend the traffic was terrible and we ended up taking a bit of a cross country route. As a result we went very close to The Standing Stones of Stanton Drew - this is a story I tell, so I decided it was time to move this tune across from my old website. I've put the story below and also a photograph of the stones themselves.
Enjoy!

Week 21: Some smallpipes, some beginner and the bent thumb!

Read Time:45 Second

Hello!
This week we a couple of tunes suitable for the beginner and some Scottish Smallpipe tunes!
Lavenders Blue
The Shoemaker
Skye Boat Song (on the mini-harpa)
Sevenoaks for Scottish Smallpipes
Røros Pols for Scottish Smallpipes

I also got round to filming the video that I've been wanting to do for a while now - the video showing the thumb from the players perspective and why it should be bent!
I'm starting to have to book some flights to get to the international workshops I'm teaching at, so I've updated my Flying with a Nyckelharpa page on my main website. It's a tricky question and one that I've never found an answer to that isn't stressful! There is a link to a page where I'm going to be writing about all my flying experiences, you'll need to ask me for the password for that.
Enjoy!

Week 20: The Säckpipa Virtual Halsway Session

Read Time:36 Second

Hello!
How did we get to week 20? To be honest my head is still in March 2020, so May 2022 is quite a mystery! But we are going to reach the end of me transferring over the nyckelharpa lessons fro my old blog site soon. This week I decided to finish adding the final two lessons for the Virtual Session in the Bar at Halsway Manor number 15 - säckpipa tunes. I thought it might be nice to re-visit that session. It's the one where "Jonny couldn't make it to the session."
Enjoy!
